چکیده

This paper studies a model where consumption has two components, one that is costlessly adjustable and one that involves an adjustment cost. Agents have time-separable neoclassical preferences over the two components of consumption. We show that aggregating over a heterogeneous population of such agents implies dynamics identical to those of a representative consumer economy with habit formation utility. In particular, aggregate consumption is a slow-moving average of past consumption levels, and risk aversion is ampli…ed because the marginal utility of wealth is determined by excess consumption over the prior commitment level. In certain cases, the representative consumer’s preferences and consumption dynamics coincide exactly with the exponential form of habit proposed by Constantinides (1990). Hence, consumption commitments provide simple, non-psychological micro-foundations for “habit.”

Investigation on Habit Formation, Risk Aversion and Intertemporal Substitution in Consumption of Iranian Households by GMM Approach

Consumption is the principal feature of Iran’s Gross National Production. Therefore, recognizing of factors that influence it is quite crucial. This article, investigates habit formation, durability, relative risk aversion and intertemporal substitution in consumption expenditures of Iranian households. For empirical study, at first, we constructed two weighted portfolio of the main assets re...

Intertemporal Consumption and Savings Behavior: Neoclassical, Behavioral, and Neuroeconomic Approaches

This paper summarizes neoclassical, behavioral, and neuroeconomic models of intertemporal consumption and savings behavior. I summarize the construction and implications of Modigliani & Brumberg’s Life-Cycle Hypothesis [4] and Laibson’s quasi-hyperbolic consumption function [8] as background and motivation for Bisin & Benhabib’s neuroeconomic model of dynamic consumption behavior [3]. In partic...

Consumption Commitments and Asset Prices∗

This paper studies portfolio choice and asset prices in a model with two consumption goods, one of which involves a commitment in that its consumption can only be adjusted at a cost. Commitments effectively make investors more risk averse: they invest less in risky assets and smooth total consumption more. Aggregating over a population of such consumers implies dynamics that match those of a re...

Foundations of Intrinsic Habit Formation

We provide theoretical foundations for several common (nested) representations of intrinsic linear habit formation. Our axiomatization introduces an intertemporal theory of weaning a decision-maker from her habits using the device of compensation. We clarify differences across specifications of the model, provide measures of habit-forming tendencies, and suggest methods for axiomatizing time-no...

Asset Pricing with Habit-Dependent Preferences: Behavioral Foundations and Empirical Tests

This paper extends asset pricing models based on habit-dependent preferences in two new directions. First, previously proposed preference specifications are shown to be special cases of a more general model based on behavioral micro-foundations, that is a gain-loss model with habit utility as the reference state. Second, habit is modeled as the rational expectation of future consumption, rather...
